Good Vibes

7.31.2009 at 11:54 AM
This past weekend I attended Friday and Sunday of Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Overall, the festival was a hit. Top artists of the weekend included George Clinton and Parliment Funkadelic, Keller Williams, Buddy Guy and that young Norwegian kid that rocks the blues, Moe., Deep Banana Blackout, and headliner Crosby Stills and Nash.

The two artists that stood out for me we're Deep Banana Blackout and Crosby Stills and Nash. Having never heard either live I was blown away. DBB absolutely killed(in a good way) their set playing every song as if it was their last. I was about 10 people back from the rock-ade and could practically reach out and touch them. Of all the bands I saw, they "wow'd" me the most. Dancing was a must.

Crosby, Stills and Nash have been a longtime favorite of mine and seeing them live was quite the treat. I had front row, right for them, with Graham Nash right in front of me. Talk about a unique trio with a killer audience connection. Not only did they play great classic music, they also had the best audience connection I've ever seen. (I guess all those years playing have really paid off!) I felt like Crosby was making eye contact with me every time he looked in my direction, it was pretty cool.

Vibes was excellent and now i have homework to finish up.

Until next time.

Things I Like Today.

5.16.2009 at 12:38 PM
The last few weeks have been absurdly busy, but with classes finished, I have a minute to breath, so I thought i'd post a short one before studying for the afternoon.

1. Last.fm
2. Macromedia Dreamweaver 8
3. James Brown
4. Twitter
6. Passion/drive

Last.Fm is a really great program for finding new music and sharing what you are listening to.  it basically taps into your current music player, in my case, iTunes, and does what's called "scrobble" tracks that you listen to.  Basically, it takes the track names of what you listen to and posts them online, keeps track of what you listen to, recommends new artists and lets you listen to radio based on your 'Library'.  Its also a social community of music listeners.

Dreamweaver 8 is a really cool, simple way to build a website without needing to know the ins and outs of the various code languages.

James Brown. Funk.

Twitter, if you don't know what it is, get on the band wagon, everyones doing it.

users..... The critically acclaimed 'Drewspace'. I build this site for a music technology project.  All fun..

passion/drive- met a kid last night that has a lot of passion to get into the music business.  he wants to get involved with WICKit Music Group.

Teefury is a super cool tshirt website.  A t-shirt a day for $9.  basically, they have a t-shirt on sale for 24 hours and then a new goes up.  all really cool artwork.

Thats  all for now.

Spring weekend...or is it?

4.28.2009 at 1:29 PM
This past weekend was supposedly spring weekend here up in the wonderful town of Oneonta, New York.  this is the fouth year now that Hartwick and SUNY Oneonta have hosted "OH Fest"-a day of fun for the students and community.  The town closes main street for the street carnival (live music, street vendors, rides, arts &crafts, etc..) and then there's a concert at seven o'clock to finish up the day.  This year, the band selection committee blew it.  For the headlining band, the options were between Eve 6 and Reel Big Fish.  (The latter selection being my choice.) There were no contractual issues with either band and most of the student body was for RBF and somehow, Eve 6 managed to get the gig.  LAME.  These guys have well past their prime.  I saw them once when they were just starting to get somewhere and personally wasn't impressed. Oh, that was about 10 years ago when they were probably in their twenties.  Now they're 30 year old guys in jeans that fit their girlfriends, singing to the 13-15 scene crowd.  For the 5 minutes that i listened to, i was saddened.  Sorry Eve 6, but its time to close this chapter and try something new.  On the bright side, Rahzel was pretty cool.

(I think i may stop procrastinating now actually...this paper is kind of important.)

procrastination.

at 1:17 PM
Once again, its that time of the year when I find myself procrastinating.  But honestly, who really wants to do a 10 page analysis paper on a four and a half minute Atonal piece?  The problem at hand is that i'm running out of ways to entertain myself.(well honestly, I'm not- this is procrastinating.)  So, help keep me entertained and send me a track to listen to (soundcloud button down on the right).  I need some new tunes!

General Motor's Volt - "Fully charged by 2010"

4.24.2009 at 11:30 AM

They may have killed the electric car in the 90's, but GM's latest project, the Chevy Volt, has become the symbol of the company's future.  The Chevy Volt combines the power of battery and gasoline in a sleek, affordable, electric car.  A full charge lasts about 40 miles before a drop of gasoline is used.  With gasoline, the range is extended to 400 miles without a recharge. but who regularly drives over 40 miles and wouldn't get a chance to recharge this puppy though?? General Motors' aim is to provide the average american with a daily, gas-free commute.  In my opinion, the Volt will do just that.  With gas at $3/ gallon, the Volt will pay for itself in about 5 years.  Look out Toyota, this car will be HOT!!  Electric is the new gasoline.  Look for the Chevy Volt in 2010 and support our economy.

The Allman Brothers 'Eat a Peach' album is currently spinning on the iTunes.

Enjoy the sunny Friday afternoon, looks like it's going to be in the 80's all weekend.

Some music for the mind.

Its been a while since my last post, so I thought i'd share a little of what I'm listening to.

Lately I've been really into 'The Bad Plus,' an innovative Jazz Fusion trio out of NYC. They have a very clean, tight, and versatile sound that really draws listeners in. They released their first album called Fresh Sound in 2001 and have several more out.  There most recent album is For All I Care, and features Wendy Lewis on vocals.  For All I Care has a collection of classic covers from Lithium to Comfortably Numb.  I highly recommend it.

They happen to be bloggers too.  check out www.thebadplus.com for their blog, full bio and other good stuff!

You can find For All I Care here in the iTunes store.

Finally, a project that I have been working on with my professor, mentor, and colleague for the last month has launched.  Wickdex - 'Hartwick College's wicked clear economics,' is a glimpse of the economy on one webpage. www.wickdex.com  With its twelve simple metrics (eleven until tomorrow), wickdex will provide everyone from high executive positions to the average joe with a simple, user friendly look at the economy.  Check it out! www.wickdex.com

Technology

4.08.2009 at 10:11 PM
For those of you interested in the music industry, business, marketing yourself and being self sufficient. I highly recommend getting up to date on current tech!

www.Twitter.com is a social network that allows you to 'follow' and be 'followed' by people.  basically, if you use it creatively and appropriately, you could have an update be seen be several hundred people...depending on how many followers you have.  you can follow me at Fenderplyr9009

Blogging... its been around for quite a while, but lately I feel like its really beginning to hit its prime.  there are many different blog sites such as Blogger.com, livejournal, wordpress, etc.. Blogs are incredible marketing tools when used creatively and properly.

Facebook/ Myspace- If you don't have one, get one.  aside from Twitter's community, Facebook and myspace provide a different kind of social network.  both are growing communities and will probably.. if they haven't already.. cause people to never speak in person.

These are just a few technological things that are incredibly useful if you are interested in marketing yourself/ company etc.

over and out.
